How Can Mould Impact Your Health?

Mould itself isn't usually the direct cause of health problems, but the dangerous chemicals it produces are. These harmful substances are known as mycotoxins.

Why Does Mould Create Mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins act as a chemical defense mechanism. Moulds generate these toxins to prevent other moulds and microorganisms from overtaking their space. For example, if one type of mould takes hold in an area, it may produce mycotoxins to stop a different type from spreading. Given that these chemicals are strong enough to kill other mould strains, it's not surprising that they can also pose serious risks to human health.

By understanding this natural process, we can better appreciate why exposure to certain types of mould — especially in damp, poorly ventilated spaces — can lead to health problems.

Research on mould and its health effects continues to evolve. As scientists learn more, we can expect to uncover further insights into the dangers and biological behaviors of this complex organism.
