Why This Eastlakes Bedroom Ceiling Couldn’t Be Scrubbed for Mould

Mould rarely stays in one spot. Once it takes hold in a room, it can spread across walls, into window areas and onto fittings like blinds and vents.

At a unit in Eastlakes, NSW, Mould Busters attended to carry out mould removal in one affected bedroom. Mould was present on the walls, around the window and on the vertical blinds.

Mould Cleaning on the Bedroom Walls

The mould affected walls and the areas around the window were cleaned. The before photos show how far the growth had spread, from the wall corners up to the cornice line and along the window wall.

Mould Around the Power Point and Wall Vent

Mould had also built up around fixtures on the walls, including a power point and a wall vent. These areas were cleaned as part of the works.

Fixtures like these are easy to overlook. Mould around a vent is worth noticing, because vents are part of how air moves through a room.

Mould on the Vertical Blinds

The vertical blinds near the window were also mould affected, particularly along the head rail. These were cleaned along with the surrounding window area.

Why the Popcorn Ceiling Was Handled Differently

Mould was also growing on the textured popcorn ceiling, but it could not be scrubbed away. Popcorn ceilings in buildings of this age often contain asbestos, and scrubbing could disturb the material.

Instead, the ceiling mould was sprayed with a mould chemical, which was left to dwell. This is a good example of why mould work has to suit the material and the building, rather than following one method for every surface.

If you live in an older home with a popcorn ceiling, avoid scraping or scrubbing it yourself, even if you can see mould.

Moisture Testing the Bedroom Walls

Before the cleaning was completed, the walls were checked with moisture testing. They did not show elevated moisture levels at the time of testing.

Moisture readings help show whether materials are holding water. This matters because mould is linked to moisture, and it isn’t always caused by a leak. Condensation, humidity and poor airflow can also play a part.

Sealed External Vents Noted

During the visit, the external vents of the property were observed to have been sealed with silicone, unlike other ground floor properties. The assessment noted it may be worthwhile investigating this further.

Vents help air move through a building. Looking at airflow is an important part of mould prevention, because cleaning alone does not address why mould grew in the first place.

What to Do If Mould Is Spreading in Your Bedroom

  • Look beyond the walls. Check blinds, window frames, vents and power points.

  • Check your ventilation. Make sure vents are clear and air can move through the room.

  • Be careful with older ceilings. Don’t scrub or scrape a popcorn ceiling yourself.

  • Find the cause. Moisture testing and an inspection can help work out why the mould grew.
